Law & Order: SVU Continues Historic Streak with 26th Season Renewal Alongside Chicago Fire, P.D., Other NBC Hits

Executive producer Dick Wolf’s slate of NBC franchises, including ‘SVU’, ‘Chicago Fire’, ‘Chicago P.D.’, ‘Chicago Med’, and ‘Law & Order’, will be returning for more primetime TV next year

There’s no stopping Olivia Benson — and the rest of the Dick Wolf universe.

On Thursday, NBC announced its slate of renewals for the upcoming 2024-2025 season, with Law & Order: SVU getting the green light for it’s record-breaking 26th season.

The show — currently starring Mariska Hargitay, Ice-T, Peter Scanavino and Octavio Pisano — previously set the record as the longest-running primetime live-action series in history, and continues to hold the title with its recent renewal.

The original Law & Order was also renewed on Thursday. The news comes on the heels of Sam Waterston’s departure from the series as beloved district attorney Jack McCoy, and Scandal alum Tony Goldwyn’s subsequent addition to the cast. The show will kick off its 24th season next year.

The slew of One Chicago shows — executive producer Wolf’s other beloved NBC franchise — also scored additional orders: Chicago FireChicago P.D. and Chicago Med will be returning for seasons 13, 12 and 10, respectively.

Chicago Fire recently experienced a cast shakeup of their own: Kara Killmer, who played Sylvie Brett on the series for the last ten years, departed the show just last month.

She told PEOPLE of her send off: “There’s so much buildup. We had been coming off of this long strike and coming back for six episodes, so I had a lot of time to process it, and I would say I spent more time savoring it than grieving. Ten years is a long time, and I just had the best time that I could possibly have.”

However, the fate of Law & Order’s spinoff show Organized Crime — which rounds out the network’s Thursday night block of TV and is currently in the middle of its fourth season — remains “in discussion,” per NBC’s press release.

Organized Crime currently stars Christopher Meloni as Det. Elliot Stabler, alongside Danielle Moné Truitt and Ainsley Seiger. After departing SVU in 2011 after contract negotiations broke down, Meloni, 62, returned for Organized Crime in 2021.

Since kicking off the current 25th of SVU season in January, Hargitay, 60, has been busy celebrating her show’s (and her Benson’s) big milestone. Just last week, NBC honored the beloved captain character with “Olivia Benson Plaza” at Rockefeller Center in New York City.

SVU is currently the No. 1 entertainment show in the 18-49 demographic on Thursday nights, and the show remains the longest-running live-action series on primetime television.

In January, Hargitay opened up to PEOPLE about her historic tenure as captain of the most elite squad.

“We’ve been on a parallel journey,” she said. “There’s a thing WWOBD, what would Olivia Benson do? The fans would always talk about it, and one day it hit me. I also have those moments where I’ve sort of slipped into her. If there’s a crisis, I just take over and lead like that. Being strong and fearless. It’s sort of this perfect feminist story.”
